DJ Lubi will use his New Northern bursary to present two exciting emerging artist shows; one celebrating the music and life of Xero Slingsby - one of Leeds' cult jazz musicians and punk jazz pioneers of the 1980s’ - and the second showcasing the growing interest in the Leeds jazz scene for world jazz - Latin jazz, Brazilian jazz, Afro jazz.

Fergus Quill Plays Xero Slingsby: celebrating Xero's 69th birthday with support act Teruki Chan & Harvey Parkin-Christie

Fergus Quill celebrates the music of 80s’ cult Leeds punk jazz saxophonist Xero Slingsby, who died in 1988 of a brain tumor aged just 31. With Xero's wife's permission, Fergus released an album of reworked Xero tunes in 2023. Alongside Fergus on bass, the band features Bess Shooter (alto sax) Harvey Parkin-Christie (tenor sax) Hamish Dixon synths & noise and Theo Goss drums.
Support act Teruki Chan and Harvey Parkin-Christie are emerging artists in the Leeds/UK free jazz scene. Christie/Chan Duo - Harvey Parkin-Christie saxophones & noise and Teruki Chan - drums & noise.

Don’t miss out on a fantastic night of Afro-Cuban, Afro & Brazilian jazz fusion with two top Leeds bands of emerging artists. Yamikani is a 10 piece Afro-Cuban/Cubop band led by multi-instrumentalist Reece-Soko Fogg featuring musicians from Afrodesia, Fight The Giant, Kanavu, Nova.Sol playing original Reece compositions influenced by Mongo Santamaria, Max Roach, Hugh Masekela.
The support band Cinqullo led by drummer Tom Warrilow play a mix of jazz fusion with Brazilian and Afro-Cuban influences. Cinqullo have been featured at Leeds Jazz Festival plus a Tomorrow’s Warriors HPBC show in 2025 supporting London artist Allexa Nava.
