In October members of the Wakefield Youth Jazz Orchestra enjoyed a special day being coached by Mike Walker, Iain Dixon, Dennis Rollins and Jo McCallum as part of the ‘Music for Life’ project.

This Jazz North education project in partnership with Wakefield Music Hub, is giving the Wakefield Youth Jazz Orchestra the opportunity to rehearse and perform the Music for Life suite of music. The rehearsals began in September 2014 led by Jo McCallum. The jazz orchestra will perform a selection of the original music at their music hub Christmas celebration in November 2014 and will complete the project with a performance at Wakefield Jazz Club in May 2015. Both performances will be co-directed by Jo McCallum and feature guest guitarist, Mike Walker.

About the project
In 2012/13, Jo McCallum commissioned twelve contemporary jazz composers to write an original piece of music for a jazz orchestra. Over a six month period she rehearsed the music with the Music For Life Youth Big Band based in Cheshire. The rehearsal period was followed by a five date tour across the north west featuring guest guitarist, Mike Walker.
