Our 8th ‘Jazz Camp for Girls’ took place over the weekend of 7th-8th March 2026 and was a great success. 70 girls attended events across the north in Gateshead, Hull, Liverpool, Scunthorpe and Trafford. The camps encouraged the participants to be creative and explore playing jazz and improvisation in a safe, nurturing environment.

My child loved this last year and she was very excited to attend again. The tutors create a relaxed atmosphere and she really enjoys the chance to play with others and have a go at improvising.

Camp tutors reported that the girls were keen to try new things and had noticeably increased levels of confidence by the end of the day.

Our drummer was so inspired by today that she wants to attend our regular jazz band weekly and made a new friend who also attends our weekly jazz band on flute.

Project manager Helena Summerfield said:

“We have a fantastic network of northern educators delivering our camps. Improvising for the first time can feel quite daunting but with the right teacher it becomes a really fun thing to do. I just love reading the girls’ feedback and hearing about the way our camp leaders are inspiring the next generation of jazz musicians.”

The ‘Jazz Camp for Girls’ initiative started in Denmark over 10 years ago to encourage more girls to play jazz and improvise. It has grown into an international project with camps now taking place in 18 different countries - across Europe but also in Canada and India. Since joining the project in 2019, Jazz North has facilitated 44 camps in 15 different regions and 686 girls have attended a jazz camp so far.

Although the March weekend is over, more jazz camps are planned for the Summer term and we will be announcing these dates and locations in the coming months. Watch this space and sign-up to our mailing list for the latest information.

It was really fun, I learned loads and I was given the chance to be creative with like-minded girls.

The camp was a great experience that let our daughter be introduced to new people, ways of thinking about music and performing. She came out buzzing and is very keen to attend a longer version in the summer.
