Jazz North Presents: ‘Making the Changes’

In partnership with Durham County Youth Big Band, Jazz North presented an afternoon of masterclasses and discussions on studying jazz, learning repertoire and playing in a small group. Led by three professional jazz musicians and recent jazz graduates, the participants took part in practical workshops and discussion groups that focus on the next steps for young musicians in jazz:

• Practising Jazz & Learning Tunes
• Leading a Small Group
• How to Get Gigs
• Q+A on Studying Jazz & Being a Professional Musician
• Resources and support on the audition process for degree level jazz study in UK, what to expect and what to practise

Who is it for?
The session is aimed at young musicians who have had some experience in jazz through school ensembles, workshops or youth jazz orchestras.

The practical workshops will centre around two tunes which are available for download in concert, Bb and Eb.

Participants are advised to look over the tunes beforehand and if possible to memorise the head and chord progression.
