How to prepare for the showcase
Getting there
travel time – leave plenty of time for the journey, M62 nightmare, gear drop off and parking, basic backline gear will be provided. MJF will be in touch with you about that.

Planning your set
What should you try to achieve in 40 minutes?
Telling a story, creating a mood, dynamics
Snap shot of the best part of a two set gig.
How many tunes? Don’t try to ram in as many tunes as possible.
Communicating with audience
Building relationship – broadcasting to everyone or talking to one person
Honesty – how you’re feeling, what kind of day you’re having
Find your own style – learn from the masters but don’t try to copy
You needn’t introduce every tune – compare will do the first one
Stagecraft
Stuff you need to think about, avoiding distractions that get in the way of the audience experience. e.g. first impressions, dress code, music stands, communication with audience, microphone technique.
CD sales
Let audience know you’ll be at the meeting point or at the entrance of the Spiegal Tent to sell CDs, autographs . This might might include a promoter who’s particularly keen to speak to you.
Stage plans, get-ins, liaising with crew
Digital Stuff
Preparation, knowing the question topics, interview techniques, elevator pitches
- Publicity pictures – introduce Porl, how to help Porl get the best shots
- Networking session (where you can use elevator pitch)
We will be able to let you know which promoters register for the showcase in advance so you do some research before talking to them.

Be positive – but don’t hassle them for a gig
