GIving high profile performance opportunities to the next generation of jazz artists
An exceptional group of up-and-coming jazz musicians from Leeds, West Yorkshire have been awarded the opportunity to perform at a number of high profile jazz festivals across The North through the Jazz North Introduces scheme.
Wandering Monster, led by double bassist Sam Quintana, is the latest beneficiary of this pioneering mentorship and support scheme for talented young jazz musicians up to the age of 25. Selected by a panel of festival directors and professional musicians, Wandering Monster impressed with their strong ensemble sound and adventurous material.
Sam Quintana says
“I am thrilled that Wandering Monster have been awarded this opportunity. Since the band’s formation two years ago we have developed a set of original material which I am really excited to showcase at some of the UK’s best jazz festivals. Thanks to the scheme we are able to perform our music to bigger and more diverse audiences and I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for our group”.
The first appearance of Wandering Monster will be at Lancaster Jazz Festival on September 17 and then Marsden Jazz Festival on October 8. Future dates will include Liverpool International Jazz Festival, Gateshead International Jazz Festival, mjf ( Manchester Jazz Festival), Southport Melodic Jazz Festival and Scarborough Jazz Festival. Other festival dates are still to be confirmed.
The band will also receive a package of help as part of the Jazz North Introduces scheme, including payment and expenses for the gigs, a photo-shoot and assistance in creating an electronic press kit.
A junior award was made to Muskrat Ramble, a young ensemble from Lancaster. Aged between 12 and 16 years of age, they were the youngest applicants and impressed the panel with their enthusiasm and potential. Muskrat Ramble will receive mentoring sessions with a professional jazz musician and a performance at a Northern jazz club to further their development.
