Covering a fortnight of diverse events in July, Brass: Durham International Festival takes one of England’s most cherished musical traditions and challenges artists and audiences to explore its past, present and future with fresh eyes and ears. Brass: Pitch is an open call to creative practitioners, individual or collective, based in England working in any art form including interdisciplinary arts practices.
Since the launch of the BRASS:Pitch programme in 2012, 9 new works have been commissioned, each in their own way challenging audiences’ perceptions and understanding of brass music, either through exploring its historical and social contexts or expanding the boundaries of the genre by creating new forms of music production.
£20,000 is available to support the programme of commissions. The number of commissions to be awarded is not fixed, though we anticipate supporting four new commissions. Awards will be based on the quality of the proposal, the strength of the idea and the ability to realise the idea in line with the budget taking into consideration any technical implications. Should it prove necessary to secure additional external funding to realise the commission idea, Durham County Council Arts Team can offer you advice and guidance to applicants invited to submit a Stage Two proposal.
